Local Black History

As one of Indiana’s oldest cities, and with Black settlements dating back to the early 1800s, Black History Month Columbus presents a number of ways to honor and learn more about Black history and heritage, such as visiting historic sites and exhibits, participating in Black History Month events, and supporting Black-owned businesses and restaurants throughout the city.

From Then to Now: 100 Years Celebrating Black History

100th Anniversary Limited-Edition Magazine

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Black History Month in the United States, a 100th Anniversary Limited-Edition Magazine was created to honor this historic milestone. The vision behind the publication was to develop a meaningful and engaging resource that highlights Black history while uplifting the voices, stories, and celebrations within the community. Serving as both a reflection and a guide, the magazine invites readers to learn, reflect, and celebrate through historical features, local spotlights, and coverage of Black History Month events. It also builds on previous years by capturing how communities continue to recognize, uplift, and honor Black history today.

Soul of Philanthropy

The African American Fund of Bartholomew County celebrates the spirit of giving in “The Soul of Philanthropy,” an exhibit that focuses on efforts by the local African American community. About 20 individuals are honored in the physical exhibit, ranging from some of the county’s earliest African American residents to young activists of today. An accompanying electronic slideshow highlights the effort of many others.

The exhibit opened in 2019 at The Commons. After a month-long stay there, it has been on display at the Columbus Learning Center. It is also scheduled to become part of a permanent display at the Madam Walker Theater Center in Indianapolis.
