Super Saturday Brings Learning, Celebration, and Community Together

The first Saturday of the month truly lived up to its name as Super Saturday, bringing together families, educators, community partners, and—most importantly—our youth for a full day of learning, celebration, and connection. The day offered meaningful experiences that highlighted Black history, academic excellence, cultural expression, and intergenerational joy. Each event built upon the next, from educational programming in the morning, to recognition and inspiration in the afternoon—finally ending with music and dance.

Celebrating Academic Achievement and Athletic Excellence at IU Columbus

Families gathered at IU Columbus for an exciting basketball game that showcased the growing presence of collegiate athletics in the community—now in its second year with both men’s and women’s teams.

This event was made possible through a partnership between IU Columbus, Black History Month Columbus, and Umoja Bartholomew County – Education Matters (a local Black and Black-Biracial youth initiative led by Felicia Garr). Students and families were welcomed with free lunch from Mother Bear’s and IU Columbus t-shirts and, at halftime, Umoja students were invited onto the court to be recognized for their academic achievements. Being celebrated in front of a full crowd—alongside college athletes and coaches—sent a powerful message about the importance of education, dedication, and perseverance.

Following the recognition, students had the opportunity to meet players and coaches, ask questions, and learn more about what it takes to succeed both academically and athletically. The experience offered inspiration and encouragement, helping students see what is possible for their own futures.

Ending the Day with Music, Movement, and Intergenerational Joy

The final event of Super Saturday brought the community together for the Black History Month Dance, hosted at Foundation For Youth in collaboration with Black History Month Columbus. From the moment guests arrived, the energy in the room was contagious. With DJ Jerone Wood—a local teacher—on the turntables, music filled the space and created a fun, welcoming environment.

The dance welcomed kids in grades K–12, parents, and grandparents, making it a truly intergenerational celebration. Throughout the evening, adults introduced classic dances deeply rooted in Black culture, including the Wobble, Cupid Shuffle, Cha Cha Slide, Running Man, and Tootsie Roll. In return, the kids shared today’s popular TikTok dance trends, teaching adults new moves and showing how cultural expression continues to evolve across generations.

Participants also learned about the cultural significance of the Soul Train line and the dance circle, both of which play important roles in Black cultural expression. One by one, participants stepped into the center, dancing freely while the crowd cheered them on. The energy was loud, joyful, and uplifting.

A Day Centered on Our Youth

At its heart, Super Saturday was about investing in our young people. Each event was intentionally designed to educate, uplift, and celebrate youth while creating opportunities for families to connect. Seeing children move from one event to the next—excited, energized, and eager to participate—was one of the most meaningful outcomes of the day.

Some families originally planned to attend only one event but stayed for all three because of the positive experiences and sense of community they felt throughout the day. That continued momentum was a powerful reminder of the impact thoughtful, youth-centered programming can have.

Super Saturday reflected the strength of collaboration and the importance of creating spaces where young people can learn history, be recognized for their achievements, and celebrate culture alongside their families and community. It was a day filled with purpose, joy, and connection—and an unforgettable highlight of Black History Month Columbus.
